Accessibility on Campus

UBC is dedicated to enhancing campus access and navigation for everyone—students, faculty, staff, and visitors—regardless of age, background, interest, or ability. We are committed to removing significant barriers to ensure full participation as independent members of the community.

Wayfinding

Whether you’re walking, rolling, or cycling around the Okanagan campus, accessible routes to get you from point A to point B are easy to find using the online map tool.

This wayfinding resource focuses on enhancing exterior pedestrian mobility by connecting users to their destinations while avoiding mobility constraints like stairs and steep slopes. It also highlights accessibility features such as exterior ramps and automatic door entrances to ensure a smoother campus experience.

Additional map features:

  • Mobile friendly;
  • Provides building information including address and hours of operation;
  • Meets Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (i.e., it has been tested against screen readers, has descriptive labels, and uses contrasting colours to aid the visually impaired);
  • Avoids construction areas (i.e., routes that are affected by construction will not be shown); and
  • Shares the total distance for each route and includes written and visual directions.

How to use the wayfinding system

  1. Open the map tool
  2. Type in your current location and destination in the top left-hand corner (start typing a building name to see a list of locations)
  3. Select preferred transportation option using the icons at the very top (walk, accessible, bike/roll)
  4. For high contrast visibility, select the gear icon
  5. For written directions, select the icon with the notepad
  6. For more information about the mapping tool, select the info icon, top right of page

Accessible Transit

BC Transit is dedicated to ensuring accessible bus travel for all commuters. Their fixed route buses feature lifts or low floors for easy boarding and disembarking, and adjustable front benches to accommodate mobility aids securely. Additionally, drivers are trained to call out stops and assist passengers with specific needs. When using BC Transit services, let the driver know your requirements to receive the necessary support for a comfortable journey.

For more information, visit BC Transit Accessibility.

Accessible Parking

Accessible stalls are available throughout the campus and require an Accessibility Permit for use by students, faculty, and staff. Non-UBC staff and contractors must have a valid SPARC parking permit to utilize these marked spaces.

Universal Accessibility

Recognizing that accessibility is essential to a safe, healthy, and sustainable campus, we strive to design spaces that empower individuals to thrive socially, intellectually, and independently. For more information, further details are available in Transportation Planning.
