PHASE 1 PUBLIC CONSULTATION

From March 23 – April 10, we asked the campus community to tell us what was important to them about University Way and what opportunities they saw for its future.

What we heard

Here is a summary of what we heard in the 11 questionnaires. The numbers in the brackets indicate how many times we heard a theme.

Organized Events 

We heard a lot of support for events that include all campus user groups (8). We also heard a desire for an area that can accommodate outdoor concerts (6), and other gatherings like protests, rallies or outreach (5). We also heard a desire for space that supports outdoor education and learning (4).

Sustainable Design

We heard support for incorporating solar energy generation and use (8), as well as support for planting native vegetation (7), and showcasing storm water features (4).

Seasonal Patterns

Respondents felt that University Way should be area that is used throughout the year (4) and suggested a sheltered area that is easily accessible and balances sun access with shelter from the elements (3).

Informal Events

Respondents felt that University Way should have informal areas for people to eat, sit, read, meet friends, and have coffee (4). We also heard that the area should include space for small group gatherings (4) and quiet contemplation (4).

Phase 1 Consultation Summary Report

This report summarizes the input received during the first phase of public consultation on the University Way redesign, which took place from March 23 – April 10, 2016, with opportunities to provide input online or in person at the public open house that was held on March 30, 2016 and at the Spring Fest event on March 31, 2016.
